Pearl Jam’s guitarist, Mike Mccready, recently dished out details on the band’s upcoming album, promising a musical experience that defies expectations. The follow-up to 2020’s “Gigaton,” produced by the acclaimed Andrew Watt—known for his work with Eddie Vedder on the Pearl Jam singer’s 2022 solo LP “earthling”—is said to pack a heavier punch than fans might anticipate.
In a recent interview with Classic Rock magazine, McCready shared insights into their collaboration with Watt, a multi-Grammy-winning producer with an extensive portfolio that includes working with artists like Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Justin Bieber, Ozzy Osbourne, and The Rolling Stones. According to McCready, Watt’s influence in the studio was transformative, pushing the band to stay focused, play with intensity, and churn out songs at an unprecedented pace. Unlike the prolonged process for “Gigaton,” the upcoming album came together swiftly under Watt’s guidance.
As for the musical direction, McCready revealed that the new material is a departure from the norm, carrying the melodic energy reminiscent of the band’s early works. He emphasized Watt’s role in encouraging them to play harder and with more thoughtfulness than they have in a long time. Additionally, McCready hinted at a return to a more prominent lead guitar role for himself, drawing parallels to his earlier work with Chris Cornell and Temple of the Dog.
Discussing the impact of current events on Eddie Vedder, the band’s lead singer, McCready acknowledged Vedder’s longstanding activism and advocacy for political causes. In the guitarist’s words, Vedder has always been aware of societal issues and has been a vocal supporter of the underdog. McCready expressed the band’s commitment to being proactive, solution-oriented, and advocating for positive change.
In a broader context, McCready shared his thoughts on the potential ups and downs of 2024, expressing concerns about a potential re-election of Donald Trump. However, he also highlighted the importance of unity, compassion, environmental responsibility, and the rejection of racism and ignorance as essential elements for a better world.
Reflecting on their collaboration with Andrew Watt, McCready praised the producer’s energy, youthfulness, and keen ear. Watt’s ability to challenge the band and inject fresh perspectives into their established dynamics proved to be a vital catalyst for creativity.
As pearl jam gears up for the release of their forthcoming album, “Saviors,” on January 19 via Warner/Reprise, fans can anticipate a sonic evolution and a continued exploration of the band’s musical prowess. The collective efforts of the band members, united under the guidance of Andrew Watt, promise to deliver an album that captures the essence of their journey while pushing the boundaries of their sound.
